FAQ About Acoustic Guitar Lessons
I have been teaching guitar for almost twenty years and it's quite interesting to notice that new students have often the same questions. I hope this article will help some of you to understand some core strategies when you learn to play guitar. People often ask me about electric versus acoustic guitar lessons and I always advice starting with acoustic first. I have my good reasons for that:
An acoustic guitar is self sufficient and you don't need an amp, pedals or anything else you will need if you play electric. This is will definitely save you some money you can use for a better guitar, some classes or online video tutorials.
When you take acoustic guitar lessons you don't need to worry about the many electric guitar techniques that might just be a huge distraction when you are starting out. Now you can focus on the basic techniques like chord changes, strumming and fingerpicking.
Playing pop songs on an acoustic guitar sounds so much natural that will inspire you to play more.
Because there's no need for amplification, an acoustic guitar is much easier to carry around and use wherever you go: camps, school, friends house etc.
Starting on an acoustic guitar will make your hands stronger because it's a bit harder to press than on an electric guitar. This is a good start to your training.
Another very common question is: "Should I buy a steel string or a nylon string?". Personally I believe it's all about the sound and style of music you would like to play. It would be nice to actually have them both but if it's not possible go for a nylon string guitar if you like spanish or classical music or you just want a rounder sound. While if you play contemporary styles like blues, country, rock and fingerstyle then buy a steel string.
Once you've been practicing for a while and you're playing loads of songs then you can move on to electric guitar. Electric is slightly easier to play and you'll be glad you started with acoustic guitar lessons.
Learn to play guitar is a very fulfilling hobby and be reassured that the practice you put in will eventually pay off in due time. There's a certain level of commitment required to see results, no matter what level you want to play at. So practice, practice, practice and remember at all times to have a good time. - 18762
