Parkway Drive Is In The Fast Lane To Success

By Georg Scheffer

Parkway Drive in the Fast Lane to Success The Australian band Parkway Drive came to life in 2003 in Byron Bay, which is the laid back, beachfront hometown of the band's hard driving members. The reason for this rather pedestrian name, you ask? It's simply the name of the street where they used to have jam sessions and pulled all nighters as they practiced the music they loved.

It was obvious that these 5 band mates were seriously hardcore metal men that could pound it out in style. The charisma of the group is undeniable and they have an uncanny ability to connect with every member in the audience. They look more like surfer dudes with an edge, but make no mistake these guys are heavy metal to the bone. Killing with a Smile was the first full-length album by the group.

This was released in August 2005 and the band revved up their notoriously frantic pace of performances and tours. Parkway Drive became a strong act as they performed for headlining shows around Australia and spread their wings to other countries as well. The touring has been the vehicle that they used to really crank up their fan base and visibility.

Current Parkway Drive band members

- Winston McCall - front man and vocals
- Ben Gordon - percussionist/drums
- Jeff Ling - guitarist
- Luke Kilpatrick - guitarist
- "Pipey" O'Connor - bass guitarist

Epitaph Records signed the group in June of 2006 and then released the album "Killing with a Smile" to American audiences in August. 2006 continued to be a time of enormous success as the group appeared on the Taste of Chaos Tour where they played with such favorites as Underoath, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, and Saosin. Fans began demanding more Parkway Drive merch throughout the tour appearances. During the last 2 months of 2006, the group performed at the Homebake Festival, Soundwave Festival, Gravity G Festival, and Sound Fest.

The group enjoyed continued success through 2007 when they played at Underworld, which included the first live performance of "The Siren's Song". When asked to participate in the 2007 US Vans Warped Tour, Parkway Drive was the only Australian band to win the honor. When they released their album, "Horizons" in October, 2007, it scored a 10/10 from Blunt Magazine. Going straight to #6 on the ARIA charts upon its release, the album managed to stay in the top 40 for many weeks. With a sound that resembled Metallica's "Master of Puppets", the "Horizons" album's success was attributable to the US Vans Warped Tour in 2007 and Parkway Drive's exclusive position as the only Australian band on the tour was partly responsible.

Music Highlights in Brief: Album Releases were: 2005 release of Killing with a Smile 2007 release of Horizons. Singles and Music Videos include: Boneyards
2008 release of Smoke 'em if Ya got 'em.

2009 was kicked off in style when Parkway Drive announced in January that they would be headlining a US tour that included both Stick to Your Guns and MyChildren MyBride. Currently the band is in the midst of their cross-country tour. Parkway Drive merchadise including tees, posters and hoodies, are selling well as fans continue to show support for one of the heaviest of the new metal icons. 2 singles by the group getting a lot of current airplay include "Idols and Anchors" and "Romance is Dead". "Carrion" and "Guns for Show, Knives for a Pro" also continue to attract a large number of downloads. - 18762

Fresh Ideas For Personalizing Your Cellphone

By Russ Black

These days everyone has a cellphone. It is such a common accessory now, they have become almost as ubiquitous as wristwatches. And just like the little old wristwatch, they can be used to project your personality and make whatever statement you want to make. Your cellphone can be fun and colorful, business like and serious, or upscale and trendy. And the way you give your cellphone that character is much more than choosing a particular model.

The first idea, which is probably not anything new to most of you, is ringtones. Even if you think they are old hat, it might be time to revisit ringtones and find something that makes your cellphone either sing with the choir, or have a solo voice. I'm sure most of you recognize the one default ringtone that comes by default on certain handsets. It's time to get surfing and find a ringtone that will make people around you smile when your phone rings, instead of gritting their teeth wishing for an electromagnetic wave to kill all cellphone ringers forever.

Second on my list of ways to add your own personality to your cellphone is ringback tones. Not to be confused with ringtones, ringback tones are the tones that you can set up to play when someone calls you, and they are waiting for you to answer. Typically they just hear a ringing sound, but with ringback tones, you can set your favorite songs to play for your callers while they are waiting for you to pickup (or until the answering machine picks up). The ringback tone service is not 'free' like ringtones, there are two charges that you must cover in order to set up ringbacks. First you must pay a monthly service (either $1.49 or $1.99 depending on your carrier), and then you must buy each individual ringback tone. This is also reasonably cheap - from $.99 cents per song to a few dollars each. This gives you access to use the ringback tone for a limited amount of time, which can be anywhere from one month to a year, depending on what the terms of the ringback tone you downloaded were. Adding ringback tones let you send a message or an attitude to your callers before you even answer the phone.

My last way to customize your phone is one that I personally use to it's fullest extent. I don't just have one case for my cellphone, I pick up different cases and faceplates for my phone anytime I see versions that fit my phone on clearance. Especially if you have an older model of phone, you can pick up a lot of different cellphone cases super cheap. If you want to dress up your phone to match your event, you can make your statement by outfitting your cellphone in anything from classy patent leather, to your favorite hockey team, to a glow in the dark polka dot cellphone skin. On top of adding personality to your phone, the other benefits to using a unique case are never mixing it up with your friends cellphones, and also the extra protection that a case affords you cellphone.

There are endless ways to customize your mobile accessories, your cellphone is just one of these gadgets that is super easy to personalize. Adding your own character by changing up your ringtones, ringback tones and faceplate or carrying case are easy and not expensive, and will quickly give your cellphone it's own character. Making a statement with your cellphone has never been so fun! - 18762
