Telephone Hold Music - The Psychological Impact

By Tim Holdon

Telephone hold music - We've been discussing the importance of appealing to the range of people and personality types calling your business or organization. We'll now zero in on some of the specific factors that play into your choice of telephone hold music - and its emotional and psychological impact on your callers. This is important for the simple reason that your telephone hold music may actually have an influence on your bottom line!

What criteria should you consider in choosing your telephone hold music? Your own personal preference may or may not be the best point of reference. Of course, you may want to be guided in part by the tastes of your clientele who are calling, however, that may or may not be the best way to pick your on-hold music either. The effects of various types of music, from classical to country to rock to rap, on humans, animals, and even plants have been studied for years and become subjects of popular discussion. While researching for this blog I came across an article (at "Suite101", a library of online articles on a range of topics) describing one such study in which one group of mice listened to classical music twenty-four hours a day while a second group listened to heavy metal. The researcher then timed the mice as they ran through mazes to see if the music affected their speed of learning. According to the article, the researcher unfortunately had to terminate the experiment prematurely as the mice exposed to the heavy metal music all killed one another. Could there be a lesson here to learn for you in picking your telephone hold music?

Statistically, it appears that music types such as classical, soft jazz, piano, and harp may be the optimum choice for engendering a positive mindset in your callers as they wait on hold. It seems that, as a general rule, the harder-edged the music the more negative the emotional and psychological impact on those exposed to it. (By the way, violent and negative lyrics can also have adverse effects on listeners, and this would tend to compound the problems with music such as hard rock, however, for telephone hold music it is generally better to use instrumental music anyway. More on this topic in a future post.)

Real estate agents are known to employ the positive psychological and emotional affect of the smell of fresh-baked bread or chocolate chip cookies wafting through the air to help create positive feelings about a house they are showing. Perhaps the right choice in your telephone hold music could have a similar impact on your callers' ears! It may be only a subtle effect, but if it favorably disposes them toward doing business with you, even if only slightly, it would be worth it. - 18762

About 10 Definitive Film Summaries

By Morris Gardner

The following paragraphs contain some nice movie reviews. If you are looking for a movie download site here are some phrases to search. A good movie download search would use phrases such as "Download Full Length Movie", "Online Movies Downloads", and "Online Music Downloads".

Double Wedding: Loy's orchestration of her sis's marriage ceremony is upset by the presence of free spirited bohemian Powell. The megastars are the entire show in this alternatively disheartening adaptation of Ferenc Molnar's play Incredible Love. Cast includes William Powell, Myrna Loy, Florence Rice, John Beal, Jessie Ralph, Edgar Kennedy, Sidney Toler, and Mary Gordon. (87 minutes, 1937)

Food of the Gods: This is a terrible adaptation of the H. G. Wells' novel. An odd event has caused mammoth expansion in the size of wasps, chickens and rats. Cast includes Marjoe Gortner, Pamela Franklin, Ida Lupino, Jon Cypher, and Ralph Meeker. (88 minutes, 1976)

The Little Theatre of Jean Renoir: A quartet of little stories in reference to human respectability and the value of country living (instead of subsisting in a dehumanized city forest). Renoir's celluloid swan song might not be amid his best, however still has much to offer. Cast includes Jeanne Moreau, Femand Sardou, Francoise Arnoul, Jean Carmet, Marguerite Cassan, and Dominique Labourier. (100 minutes, 1971)

Darby's Rangers: Garner does well in this WW2 action film as the leader of attack troops in North Africa and Italy, concentrating on relations amid his platoon and their beach romances. Cast includes James Garner, Etchika Choureau, Jack Warden, Edward Byrnes, Venetia Stevenson, Tarin Thatcher, Peter Brown, Corey Allen, Stuart Whitman, and Murray Hamilton. (121 minutes, 1958)

Illicit: Self sufficient-minded Stanwyck cherishes Rennie, although doesn't desire matrimony to tarnish her cheerfulness. This is a boring film with way too much talking. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, James Rennie, Ricardo Cortez, Joan Blondell, and Charles Butterworth.(81 minutes, 1931)

Just a Little Harmless Sex: After a spouse throws her husband out of the home (because he picked up a hooker one day) their matrimony is put in emergency mode. She hails her lady friends together for guidance, and he does the same with the gentlemen. Then they all unite at a local club. This film is a somewhat amusing, low cost romantic comedy with an extremely desirable cast. Cast includes Alison Eastwood, Lauren Hutton, Kimberly Williams, Jonathan Silverman, Jessica Lundy, Rachel Hunter, and William Ragsdale. (98 minutes, 1999)

Red Sonja: A spectacuJarly stupid sword and magic myth with lady lead, based on mush writings of Robert E. Howard (of Conana popularity). May entertain adolescent watchers, although only the point of interest for adults is choosing who gives the worse acting job, Nielsen or villainess Bergman. Cast includes Brigitte Nielsen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sandahl Bergman, Paul Smith, Emie Reyes, Jr., Ronald Lacey, and Pat Roach. (89 minutes, 1985)

The Hi-Lo Country: The tale of 2 men in post-WW2 New Mexico who fall in love with the same lady and she's already married to someone else. A tribute to the dude way of life and the delights of real kinshi., This film has so much going for it (containing Harrelson's wonderful behavior as a hell-raiser and Oliver Stapleton's cinematography) that it's a pity it doesn't quite make it. Cast includes Woody Harrelson, Billy Crudup, Patricia Arquette, Sam Elliott, Cole Hauser, Penelope Cruz, Darren Caves, Jacob Vargas, James Gammon, Lane Smith, and Katy Jurado. (114 minutes, 1998)

The Last Seduction: A pathologically malevolent and stunningly sensual female ditches her spouse, snatches the money he's made in a drug deal, and escapes N.Y.C. to a tiny upstate town where she allures and bewilders a local gentleman who becomes her latest patsy. Fiorentino's spicy femme fatale makes Stanwyck in Triple Indemnity look like Snow White! The movie is a scorching, seductive thriller from contemporary film noir master Dahl and author Steve Barancik. Cast includes Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, J. T. Walsh, Bill Nunn, Bill Pullman, Michael Raysses, and Zach Phifer. (110 minutes, 1994)

How To Make Beats Online

How to Make Beats Online: Choosing the Right Software and How to Guide

A professional studio to make your own beats I no longer needed as it was ten years ago. The studio used to be well equipped with specialized audio hardware. Just a few years ago, software for home use became available that would help you to stimulate what they have in a sound studio. Beat-making software could be used on your home computers. The better beat making software though does come with a high price tag. Luckily though, there is a new type of online software that has hit the internet allowing you to make your own beats online. The price tag is lower and a lot more reasonable. Read on to learn how to select a good online beat-making site to use and what you need to do to make beats online.

Online Beat Making Programs - What To Look For

The first step is to make sure you have good equipment to work with. If you have poor quality equipment your beats will be of poor quality too. You will need to make sure that the website you choose has the following:

A music sequencer with separate volume control is very important. It's highly suggested you choose a site that has over sixteen tracks, because most offer eight which would not be enough to add instrumental hook, let alone lyrics and vocals.

Second, look for online beat making software equipped with a virtual keyboard. This will be invaluable when it comes time to overlay instrumental hooks over your beat line.

Beats per minute controls (BPM) allow you to control the tempo of your song. From a slow sappy love song to a quicker dance beat. This is very important because online sites often don't have BPM controls and leave you with just a standard 4/4 tempo. This will make you very frustrated when you are limited.

High quality sample and sound libraries is a nice option to have. Some make beats online programs only offer a limited library and the quality is poor, as well as their selection.

Finally, if you make your own beats online, make sure any online beat making software you use has an easy to use download option for your completed songs. Make sure it puts you finished music is a common file format. The MP3 music file format is the best option, as it is open-source and is compatible with almost every music player available. Online software that downloads your completed project into some obscure file format that few music players use can be very frustrating.

What To Do When You Make Beats Online

Start by laying down your "hi hats" or high tones like cymbals and bells. Use this to establish your basic beat framework. These high tones can be used as a guide.

2. Lay down your bass notes next. This will help you establish the tempo, and rhythm of your song.

3. Insert your kicks and snare drums to flesh out your beat. These are clear, crisp beats (in contrast to the reverberating bass beats) that will form the bulk of your beat line.

4. Next use a composed instrumental melody and overlay over top of the beats. The instrumental hook is what makes your beat, now a piece of music. This is what is going to grab your listener's attention, and make it stick in their mind all day. This step is often forgotten or left out by amateurs, or beginners, forget this crucial part of the process.

That is all you need to know about the basics for how to make beats online. With some practice and a whole lot of experimentation, you will start to easily make your own beats right online. With good quality online beat making software, there should be a lot fewer limits than if you settle for not so great software. - 18762

Beat Making Programs - Discover What To Look For In A Great Program

By Brad Byrum

How would you like to learn how to lay down hip hop, rap, jazz, or even classical beats? If so, then boy do I have some good news for you! Nowadays, there are plenty of great beat making programs that you can use to create beats in just about every genre of music. In this article we offer some advice relating to the things you need to consider before you actually purchase one of these programs for making your own beats.

During the last few years the quantity of high quality software programs which both novice and veteran producers can use has grown substantially. All of these systems offer features which allow you to create some very good quality beats on your own computer. But you must be aware that some programs have been developed that only allow you to create beats online, while others allow you to download your beats and save them to your computer to use however you'd like.

One of the biggest benefits to be had from using these online beat making programs is that they teach you about music production at a pace you find suitable. Another thing with many of these programs is that they were created with the Novice in mind, suitable for those who have never attempted to create beats before. They also are relatively cheap to purchase.

So what should you be looking for when deciding which kind of beat making programs to use? Below we offer some guidelines that you may find helpful in selecting a program that meets your particular requirements the best.

1. If you are completely new to the world of creating beats for yourself then select a program that has been developed specifically for beginners in music production to use. These programs will offer clear step by step instructions on all aspects of creating music that you will find easy to understand.

2. Although you may be interested in creating beats using music beat maker software for one particular genre of music, don?t limit yourself to finding programs that are specifically for this purpose. You are far better off going for an application that allows you to create beats across all different genres of music. This will help you to create beats that incorporate sounds or instruments from 2 or 3 different styles of music into your beats, which will help make them more unique. How many hip hop or rock songs have you heard before that incorporated violins or some other classical instrument into the beat?

3. Go for those online beat making programs where there is a members area for you to join. Many of these offer additional features such as downloadable tutorial videos and lessons that are specifically about music production. Within most members areas you'll find that you can learn more about every area of making music and how different instruments can affect the sound you create by using them.

4. Finally, look for those beat making programs which also provide information relating to other types of high-end systems like Pro Tools. This can provide you with a far better understanding of how the program you are currently using works and will help you in creating sounds that are completely unique. Additionally, it will be a much easier transition for you when you upgrade to one of the more expensive studio-grade systems. Or, if you ever apply for a job at a music production company you will need to have an understanding of how a system like Pro Tools works. - 18762

Guitar Tabulature - Find the Key of a Song

By Adam Baker

Guitar tabs are an informative guitar- favorable mode of setting riffs down, but they generally are not as much informative as sheet music. Guitar tabs often rely on backing tracks with some descriptions and analysis to support them. This is because they do not have key information and timing??" but if you are fortunate, the description will give you the key.

A lot of tabs published in magazines include the key at the top of the tab. But if you have a tab without the key, you will not be able to say what key it is in? Well, dont worry at least you have the notes, which is a great start. One method is to write down all of the notes and compare them to scales that you have in your mind. A good opportunity of understanding the key out will be there, if you can pick out 8 different notes but if you only have two the case may be different.

For example, if you pick out 8 tones and they are A, B, C, D, E, F and G that grants you some strong clues. The first 2 choices are the key of C and the key of a small-scale. I found this out by ordering the notes and comparing them to the notes in various scales.

Other possibilities include the various modes of the C Major scale. Such as: A Aeolian ( same as the A minor-scale above), F Lydian, G Mixolydian D Dorian, E Phrygian B Locrian

Experience is essential to figure out the modes in use. Particularly, you can check the chord that is being played as it will probably give you a clue. For example Em or Em7 would direct towards a Phrygian scale instead of standard major.

Of course you may run into some very complex scales that arent just very simple to spot by looking at the notes, or even someone is simply "cheating in which the song is being played chromatically or without reference to a particular scale. In short terms, the all-important thing is to have knowledge about the backing chords that will help you here. - 18762
