Drum Instruction DVD: Private Lessons At Home

By Justin Divens

We do not have roll over minutes in our house. It is good to skip days sometime to let you family know that you are thinking about them. As any drummer knows, it is easy to get lost in time when practicing, especially when playing to music. So when your wife comes in and points to her watch, you smile and say, "Yes Dear."

Your physical body can always do what you mind can conceive. Before you know it you will be producing you own style that others desire of you. It all starts in the mind.

Drumming at times can be a bit strenuous, though you will be able to play for hours when keeping the body relaxed. Without performing warm-up exercises before playing, the body can become tense and show signs of fatigue within a short while. We will explore exercises that are quick and easy encompassing the whole body from head to toe.

Vinnie Colauita once said, "Just play in 7 for like an hour". This is especially insightful as we can often get caught up in studying things too closely and miss the point. Sheer repetition will help lead to more comfort in odd times.

Sometimes the drum heads may even puncture when the hit is hard. If all this still does not provide you with good reasons to go for a new one at regular intervals, then you should realize that once it becomes weak it is difficult for you to play the roll or the fast chops. As a drummer you should change your drum heads after every six months.

Learn the 7 essential rudiments (at least) accurately and up to speed. (Especially the single and double stroke rolls). Know and recognize all the styles and be able to play variations of each. Have a thorough understanding of rhythmic note values and sight-reading.

Improvement: Each practice session should create a challenge for the musician to accomplish something never previously done. This could be a new rudiment, piece of music, or exercise, it could also be a new tempo for an old exercise, etc. And the tempo does not necessarily have to be faster - just different

Drummers like Zigaboo Modeliste and Johnny Vidacovich mixed second line with syncopated funk, developing a style called "second-line funk drumming". This style was popularized in many famous bands that came from New Orleans like the Meters (see below). Second line drumming often involves a 3/2 son clave not dissimiliar to the Bo Diddley beat although it doesn't necessarily always follow that rule, and Second line beats are also called "Street Beats". - 18762

The relationship between music, arithmetic, and genius.

By Jake Fullmoresonjohn

I recently read a book entitled simply: The Eight. It was a very intense book about how a certain chess service in the middle ages brought tremendous power to the owner of the chess service, but it also brought great despair and ruin to whomever possessed it for too long of a time period.

But the plot aside, this book conveyed a deep respect for music, numbers, and knowledge. Most musicly inclined people know that every eighth note on a piano equals an octave. Also, less people know that a chess board is 8 squares across and 8 squares deep, making 64 squares with which to move one's pieces on the board.

With that in mind, do you think it a coincidence that most of the great chess masters of our time grew up with very strict musical lessons? Bach, Mozart, and other classical musicians were not great chess masters, but they trained their minds using chess, and there are certain chess moves which correspond perfectly to some of the arrangements created by at least these 2 masters. Overall, the general impression that one should consider is that music is a very powerful medium that not only affects moods and tempers, it also trains the mind in certain subconscious ways in which regular listeners cannot discern unless trained in a musical instrument. What is your favorite past time? Hobby enthusiasts know that spare time is not to be "spent" but savored. If you have a past time you enjoy, you will never look at your spare time in the same way again. If you're not sure what past time hobby you would enjoy, here are some suggestions.

Many people listen to music as a favorite past time. There is much you can learn about any style of music. You can learn composers, famous melodies, and all about performers past and present. You can develop sophisticated tastes in jazz or classical music or collect a large assortment of CD's. Music makes a great past time hobby. - 18762

History of Drums Overview

By Amy Nutt

Throughout the history of human civilization, musical instruments have played an important role in shaping most cultures. These instruments have been used as a tool for communicating feelings and meanings. One instrument that has played a major role in musical history is the drum. When studying the history of the drum, one will discover its historical influence on many societies and cultures from around the world.

Drums emerged at almost the same time as Man. The origins of the drum is said to have occurred as early as in 6000 BC. Mesopotamian excavation teams discovered small cylindrical drums that dated back to 3000 BC. The American Indians used gourd and wooden built drums for their rituals and ceremonies. Early drums were made by hollowing out a log and tightly covering the hollowed section with a membrane.

Drums have been a very important influence on Africas culture and customs. They have been used in African religious ceremonies and rituals. Early African tribes used drums to express important meanings in their culture and practices. The drums made their way from Africa to America during the slave trade. African drums had a major influence on western rock and roll music. The early African rhythms still influence todays music.

When people realized they could play more than one drum at the same time, they began to play two or more drums simultaneously. Drum players began placing different drums together to develop a variety of beats and rhythms.

Cymbals and tom toms were invented in China. They were added to the various set of drums for new sounds and beats. Eventually chimes, wooden blocks, and cowbells were added to the musical mix. The famous Ludwig Drum Company is known to be one of the most important historical influences on the evolution of the drums. The Ludwig Drum Company was started by a young man who had a passion for playing the drums. He could not find a bass pedal that would keep up with his vigorous drumming technique. He searched every store and shop in an effort to locate a proper pedal, but could not locate one. He decided to make a bass pedal out of wood. The pedal turned out to be better than any other product on the market. With the help of his brother, Ludwig created a stronger metal bass pedal which was better than the wooden one. In 1909, The Ludwig Drum Company was created. By the 1930s, the drum kit had been born. The kit included a foot pedal and bass drum, snare, hi hat cymbal, tom toms, and large hanging cymbals.

During the 1950s, rock drummers became popular and they began expanding the drum kits by adding more cymbals and tom tom drums to the kits. This resulted in the modern drum kits we see today. Technology created the electronic drums which produced the sounds that standard drums could not create.

There have been many types of drum kits that contain a variety of drums and other drum accessories. Yamaha and Tama are two companies who have played a major role in shaping the drum that we see today.

Drums have played a major role with influencing the cultural evolution of music. The early methods and sounds of drums can be seen in todays drummer. Although new and innovative technology has improved drum sounds and provided a clearer and more accurate beat, todays new drummers still have to develop rhythm and drumstick techniques. Practice is still the best way to achieve excellent drumming skills. Imagination and innovative technology will certainly influence the future and diversity of the drum and its role in music. - 18762

RIAA And Its Role In Music Industry

By Susan Reynolds

RIAA is an abbreviation of Recording Industry Association of America. This association is a conglomerate of many large companies who cater to the recoding and music distribution all over the United States of America. It is estimated that more than 90% of the music recording ompanies and distributors are part of the conglomerate called RIAA. In the days of 1950's RIAA was primarily into the maintaining the quality of music. Today RIAA is mainly focused on into protection of copyright.

RIAA was forced to change its course mainly because people at large were illegally copying, downloading music which was actually protected by copyright. The fight for this is presently directed under the control of Mitch Bainwol. In 1990's there was an online service for sharing music files called Napster. People took advantage of it and without any payment downloaded any kind of music with it. This free availability of music also led to downloading, burning and sharing music with friends. With development of computer technology the matter of copyrightprotection gained more and more urgency.

The only course of action left to RIAA was to ban the online music sharing services like Napster. A legal framework was made to arrest such practices as music download. Strict laws were enacted in the early 2000 to prevent people from illegal download or even purchasing pirated CD's. Youth were specific targets of RIAA in order to restrict them from downloading music in violation of copyrights

RIAA is vigorously active on the front of preventing misuse of music in violation of copyrights. But in fairness it must be stated that all do not agree with its stated objective. It has been pointed out by those not in agreement that during the time online services like Napster available the number of CDs sold was far greater. It has also been criticized for poorly compensating artists while in contrast they make huge margins of profit.

However in its zeal to carryout its campaign RIAA has hurt its own credibility. People have been very much dismayed by its legal action such as the one against a kid of about 12 years, a woman in her 60's not able to use computers, or one against an ageing woman of 83 years. Such legal actions have largely undermined the trustworthiness of RIAA..

In 2003, RIAA came forth with a law that no actions will be taken against people who had downloaded illegally in the past. No action would be taken against such people if they expressed to not repeating it in future. This step was welcomed by many but the law was belittled in a year's time.

RIAA also holds firm opinion that pirated music hurts the artists, because their music is played on low grade CDs and without their official consent. The consent here refers to legally buying the music. "It makes people listen to poor quality music that was actually developed with so much hard work" is the firm opinion of RIAA.

Many people find the tactics of RIAA unacceptable in spite of RIAA puts a brave defense. Many feel that the policies of RIAA may result in death of music. - 18762
