The Plot against Harry: Entertaining, perceptive look at N.Y.C. life in reference to an aging mobster just sprung from jail, who finds the old guard changing, and his life unravelling. Cast includes Martin Pastor, Ben Lang, Maxine Woods, Henry Nemo, Jacques Taylor, Jean Leslie, Ellen Herbert, and Sandra Kazan. (80 minutes, 1989)

The Believer: Brutal evaluation of a yeshiva informed youthful guy in N.Y.C. who opts to become a neo-Nazi skinhead. Gosling gives a steller performance as a Jew (loosely based on truth) whose rationale is controversial however whose desire is genuine. R. Cast includes Ryan Gosling, Summer Phoenix, Billy Zane, Theresa Russell, Glenn Fitzgerald, Ronald Guttman, and Henry Bean. (98 minutes, 2002)

Day Watch: Weak, perplexing, and endless continuation to Night Watch in which the powers of the "light" and the "dark" are at it once more. After being framed, Anton (Khabensky) tries to spare himself and his child from wicked powers in post-apocalyptic Russia. Cast includes Konstantin Khabensky, Mariya poroshina, Vladimir Menshov, Galina Tyunina, and Viktor Verzhbitsky. (132 minutes, 2006)

The Last Time I Saw Archie: Webb's lone try at comedy is less ludicrous than some of his more earnest films; a shame, since William Bowers' script-based on his own Army experiences had genuine potential, and Mitchum pleasantly underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes, 1961)

Good News: Vigorous redo of the 1920s collegiate musical (by DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson), given a new coat of varnish by screenwriters Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Lawford is Tait College's arrogant football idol, and Allyson is the clever gal who catches him on the bounce back. Vintage melodies contain "The Best Objects in Life are Free," "Just consider," and "Varsity Drag". New numbers contain "The French Lecture" and "Pass That Harmony Tube." Cast includes June Allyson, Peter Lawford, Patricia Marshall, Joan McCracken, Ray McDonald, Mel Torme, Donald MacBride, Tom Dugan, and Clinton Sundberg. (95 minutes, 1947)

Aguirre the Wrath of God: Commanding, spellbinding story of misled conquistador who leads a group of gentlemen away from Pizarro's 1560 South American journey looking for 7 cities of gold. Dreamlike film was shot on location in remote Amazon forests; Kinski is perfect as the crazy Aguirre. Cast includes Klaus Kinski, Ruy Guerra, Del Negro, Helena Rojo, Cecilia Rivera, and Peter Berling. (94 minutes, 1972)

Mr. Ricco: Martin in eccentric role as a lawbreaking lawyer engaged with racist killings, sex and various brutalities, although looks too exhausted to care. The film has an excellent puzzling angle to the plot. Cast includes Dean Martin, Eugene Rocbe, Thalmus Rasulala, Geraldine Brooks, Denise Nicholas, Cindy Williams, and Philip Michael Thomas. (98 minutes, 1975)

Heartland: Basic, well informed tale of hearty Americans surviving the frontier life, circa 1910. Ferrell plays a youthful widow who acknowledges a job as housekeeper for dour rancher Tom in the wilds of Wyoming. Well performed, well filmed, and beautifully understated, based on the real journals of a pioneer lady. Cast includes Rip Torn, Conchata Ferrell, Barry Primus, Lilia Skala, Megan Folson, and Amy Wright. (100 minutes, 1979)

The Face of Fu Manchu: The deaths in London continue, convincing Scotland Yards that the evil Fu Manchu is still alive in spite of people witnessing his execution. The film is set in an incredible 1920s environment, with an excellent global cast. Cast includes Christopher Lee, Nigel Green, James Robertson Law, Howard Marion-Crawford, Tsai Chin, and Walter Rilla. (96 minutes, 1965)
