Transfer Music From Your iPod to iTunes - Tutorial

By Randolph Belgarde

While it's very common to download music from CDs or the iTunes Store from your computer to your iPod, many people would also like to transfer their music from their iPod back to their computer. Despite this being a very useful feature, Apple decided to not include this function with iTunes.

Some people suspect that Apple took these steps to protect music from being illegally traded. But what about people who wan to transfer their own music between their own computers using their iPod and iTunes? This isn't wrong or illegal!

You also might want need to transfer your iPod music to your own laptop or computer at work.

Sadly, iTunes on your new computer has been set to instinctively replace your current iTunes library. These settings will wipe out the library on your iPod, along with any music you have stored on it, and use the new, empty iTunes library. Yeesh!!!

It's not very difficult to figure out how to prevent this from happening. You need to choose 'no' when you're asked if you want to 'auto-sync' your iTunes and your iPod.

To transfer music from your iPod back to your computer, a complicated series of steps is necessary, from deleting files from your iTunes folder, revealing hidden files, copying the iPod Control folder, creating a new folder and putting your songs somewhere else for safety. It's even more complicated than that, but you see the idea.

Third-party software designers created programs that did all of this for you and allowed the user to skip past the overcomplicated techniques that were being used to avoid losing music.

Tune Tools, PodMaxx and iPod 2 iTunes are all programs that have been made so that you can easily transfer music on your iPod back to your computer, or to another computer.

With these programs you are able to easily copy songs, videos, and playlists from your iPod to iTunes for a moderate. Each program comes with features that would have been helpful on iTunes, and they are all very easy to use. Considering what price you would pay if you lost your complete iPod libary, they are very affordable as they cost between $20 and $30. - 18762
