What The Most Frequently Used Movie Ratings Indicate

By Jeffery B Marshall

Movies have forever had a rating system to utilize as a guide to let folks or parents know if a film is appropriate for certain spectators. Many times it is used to safeguard children from inappropriate violence or sexual scenes. Many people have disagreed with the ratings of various movies and there has even been copyright violation cases where a company with intent deleted scenes from movies that they deemed improper even though the movie had a good rating.

All movies are diverse and it is exceptionally thorny to have a established standard that is dependable for each movie. In just one movie, one person may consider a realistic suicide by gun scene to be unacceptable while another individual may be offended by a semi-nude scene that suggests sexuality. Different people have diverse beliefs about what may or may not be appropriate for a picture.

In spite of this the rating system is based upon theme and content. It is really up to parents and individuals to come to a decision if a movie is fitting or not. One should not rely completely upon a rating system but only use it as a general guide.

The G rating is apt for General audiences, or most everyone. There is not sexual or nude scenes, no swearing, drug or alcohol use, no cigarette smoking or violence.

PG stands for parental guidance. There may possibly be some passing moments of the aforementioned scenes but it is not extreme. Parents are cautioned to be attentive that these passing scenes may exist. PG-13 is a stronger PG caution. These movies are as a rule unsuitable for children under the age of 13. There may be some nudity, implied sexuality or violence. This rating is essentially for a movie that does not deserve an R rating but is still worse than the normal PG.

An R movie restricts anybody less than 17 to enter without the accompaniment of an adult guardian or parent. There are often sexual scenes, drug abuse or violence. Parents should be encouraged to watch the movies beforehand and conclude cautiously if the movie is suitable.

The newest rating is an NC-17. No one under the age of 17 is admitted into the theater to see these movies. These movies are not often pornographic but they do have adult content, either sexual or even violence beyond what is suitable for everyone below the age of 17.

As with each parenting choices, a parent must take their own responsibility for what movie is correct for their own child. It is not sensible to rely on the ratings system but only to use it as a general guide. - 18762
