Act of Violence: Act of Violence is a tense drama where we follow a man who was permanently injured during the war. He is now after the senior officer who abandoned his men in a prisoner of war camp. The stars are Van Heflin, Robert Ryan, Janet Leigh, Mary Astor, and Phyllis Thaxter. (1948 drama directed by Fred Zinnemann)
A la Mode: Lighthearted French comedy of an adolescent orphan who gets to be apprentice to a tiny village's tailor, only to crack into the style planet of the '60s. If the remainder of the film were as clever as the clothes there may be more than suggested. Cast includes Remy Duchemin, Ken Higelin, Jean Yanne, Francois Hautesserre, and Florence Challenge. (82 minutes, 1994)
Deep Space: An extraterrestrial-like being runs amok. Here is an ltra hokey sci-fi thriller with joke overtones. Napier is impeccably cast as a cop on its track. This is excellent fun for genre fans. Incidentally, the title has nothing to do with the film! Cast includes Charles Napier, Ann Turkel, Julie Newmar, James Booth, Ron Glass, Anthony Eisley, Bo Svenson, and Peter Palmer. Strange Impersonation: Marshall gives a first rate acting job in this grade-B film noir in reference to an analysis scientist whose face is dreadfully maimed in a so-called mishap. Plastic surgery allows her to decipher the puzzle behind that episode and seek reprisal. It may be the definitive work of Garbo. Cast includes Brenda Marshall, William Gargan, Hillary Brooke, George Chandler, Ruth Ford, H. B. Warner, and Lyle Talbot. (68 minutes, 1946)
The Gaucho: Cheesy melodramatics and moralizing, and not enough action hinder this lesser Fairbanks piece, in which he plays a famed, egocentric South American man. Cast includes Douglas Fairbanks, Lupe Velez, Eve Southern, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Nigel de Brulier, and Geraine Greear. (96 minutes, 1927)
Underworld: The Vampires and the Werewolves have lived for centuries now within the human world. Although humans don't even think either group even exists, to each other they are mortal enemies. The werewolves are trying to develop an new breed, combining the strengths of both races. If they succeed it will drastically shift the balance of power to the werewolves.
