The Beatles Remastered Box Sets

By Harold Laurence Quesenberry

The Beatles studio albums were initially remastered digitally for compact disc back in the 1980s at that time digital mastering was a relatively new art and since then plenty has been learned about how to master more effectively but even more important is that at that time the digital technology was still in it's infancy in comparison to today.

The many forward movements in technology and all of the information learned of how to best remaster original analog tapes digitally have been put to good use with the Beatles remasters of 2009. On September 9 The Beatles released both The Beatles in Stereo and The Beatles in Mono. And both box sets sound absolutely fantastic. If you've yet to hear 'em, I recommend you get your hands on The Beatles remasters as soon as you can.

Which kind of Beatles remasters should you buy? Well for this Beatles fan the answer was, without a doubt, "both of them" but if you can only choose one you will most likely go with the Beatles in Stereo because it includes all thirteen of their studio albums and most folks do like the stereo mixes more than the mono mixes.

The mono box set is more for serious Beatles fans who want to hear all of the differences between the mono and stereo mixes (and sometimes they are really quite different) and for fans who want to hear The Beatles how they originally heard them (this, of course, applies to the original fans who were there for The Beatles in the flesh back in the 60s.)

As of December 8, 2009 there's a third choice: The Beatles USB Memory Stick. This USB stick includes The Beatles in Stereo Box Set in a little thing you can easily hold in your hand. Isn't that cool? It actually contains all of their albums in two formats; high quality mp3s and better than CD quality 24bit FLAC.

That "better than CD quality" bit is what will bring in a good amount of audiophiles but for casual fans it's the high quality mp3s that'll that'll be added to the iPod. - 18762
