King David: Dense biblical tale tracks young David's life from his boyhood battle with Goliath to his anxious reign as emperor; only goes bad in the second half, where abruptness sabotages narrative. This movie is visually striking, with Donald McAlpine's photography. Rhapsody in Blue: Hollywood biography of George Gershwin is largely fiction, although comes off better than most other composer biographies, seizing Gershwin's excitement for his work, and some of his central conflicts. Tet Paisan: Early Rossellini classic, largely improvised by a mainly non professional cast. 6 vignettes portray life in Italy throughout WW2. The best has an American nurse looking for her lover in the rubble of Florence. Cast includes Cast includes Carmela Sazio, Gar Moore, Bill Tubbs, Harriet White, Maria Michi, Robert Van Loon, Dale Edmonds, Carla Pisacane, and Specks Johnson. (90 minutes,'46)
Pulp Fiction: This is Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece work. The story weaves around four separate, yet intertwined events. There was an accidental killing, the crime bosses wife's overdose, the boxer who didn't throw the fight, and pair of small time crooks trying to rob a restaurant.
The Great Race: Long, occasionally ludicrous, often labored comedy, not the best ever made as promoted. Fight pattern and barroom fight are highlights, although the pie scene falls flat, and other gimmicks don't work. This is absolutely a mixed bag, some parts good and some bad. Cast includes Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Keenan Wynn, Larry Storch, and George Macready. (150 minutes,'65)
China Girl: American photographer in the bizarre Orient throughout WW2 is background for incredible adventure story. Cast includes Gene Tierney, George Montgomery, Lynn Bari, Winner McLagen, Sig Ruman, Bobby Robert Cook, and Ann Pennington. (95 minutes,'42)
Passenger 57: Mastermind terrorist Charles Rane has hijacked flight 163. When they terrorist make their move, passenger 57, security expert John Cutter, is in the bathroom. When he comes out, he sees the situation, remains unseen, and plots to save the flight, and it's passengers.
The Jackal: A Russian mobster seeing that the US is helping the Russian government fight crime, has hired master assassin the Jackal to kill the Director of the FBI. In a race against time, and with not much knowledge of the Jackal, the FBI enlists the services of IRA sniper Declan Mulqueen, bringing him out of jail to help. In a face pace race against time they work furiously to track the jackal down.
A Good Woman: Strange rendition of Oscar Wilde's Woman Windermere's Fan, which has been filmed a few times over the years, set in Italy instead of England and updated from the'90s to the'30s. A number of Wilde's British characters now are Americans. Cast includes Helen Seek, Scarlett Johansson, Milena Vukotic, Stephen Campbell Moore, Mark Umbers, Tom Wilkinson, and Diana Hardcastle. (93 minutes, 2005)
