How Methods Of Music Storage Have Evolved

By Jonathan Hansen Denton

One of the biggest industries in the world is the music industry. It has been for many decades now and is showing no sign of deteriorating, however, due to the changing ways in which people acquire their music, and the ease with which music can be illegally downloaded for free from the Internet, the amount of money there is to be made by musical artists appears to be diminishing.

Physical hardware such as vinyl record and record tape used to be the only way in which you were able to acquire music. The first changes came about with the first CD that was produced.

CD's were the first medium to store music digitally (storing music as a file so that it can be put on a computer and then played) and this was a complete break-through in the way in which music is listened to. CD's were the first steps towards the creation of mp3.

From 20 years ago the storage of music has completely changed. In the 60's you were only able to listen to your favourite music on a record player and now you can listen to it on a device no bigger than the palm of your hand. Not only can you listen to your favourite music but you can add and remove songs as and when you please.

Being able to listen to music has become so much easier over the years and it has also become a considerable amount cheaper. From many different websites music can now be brought and downloaded; this is usually done in an mp3 format. This process is a lot cheaper than going to the shops and buying a CD. This is causing people to favour the downloading of the mp3 more and more and this is causing the need to create CD less and less. This also means that companies' costs are less so they do not need to charge as much to cover them. - 18762
