Back in 1975 to 1979, you could stumble on one of America's most favorite stars on a TV show called "Welcome Back, Kotter" playing a "sweathog". The part of Vinnie Barbarino was the one that launched him into prominence. Since that time he has acted in a number of films and has shown himself to be one of the best actors of our time.

In one of his initial motion picture roles, John Travolta played a young disco dancer named Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. This was in 1977, the pinnacle of the disco era. In the story, Tony meets another dancer named Stephanie and they prepare together to compete in a dance competition.

Travolta was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in a leading role for the role of Tony Manero but lost the award to Richard Dreyfuss, who won for "The Goodbye Girl".

In an additional exceptionally well-liked motion picture from those times, John Travolta starred as Buford "Bud" Uan Davis, a small-town cowboy who goes to Houston to work and live. While in Houston, he starts hanging out at a local club called "Gilley's" that is own by the well-known singer, Mickey Gilley.

He falls in love with "Sissy" (Debra Winger) and he tries to win a contest for riding a mechanical bull at Gilleys. Mechanical bulls could be found at many bars around the country for a while after "Urban Cowboy". This movie and role was a great hit but it took many years and a few botched box office films before we saw much of John Travolta again.

However, by 1994 Travolta had again caught the eye of the public by starring in the famous flick, "Pulp Fiction" as Vincent Vega, a mob hitman. The movie also starred Samuel L. Jackson, Ving Rhames and Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino directed it. The film was a huge box office success and also achieved critical acclaim.

John Travolta was for a second time nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in a leading role for Pulp Fiction, however again he lost out, this time to Tom Hanks for "Forrest Gump".
