Reasons Why Children Should Learn To Play Piano

By Michael Mickey Charles

The latest generations of parents do not seem to grasp the importance of music lessons, particularly the piano, for their children. The importance of the arts in young peoples lives seems to have been lost. Parents of today can learn some valuable lessons from the older generation of parents who thought nothing of enforcing valuable music lessons on their children, especially piano instruction from assertive, over-achieving piano teachers. Kids can benefit from the intangible lessons learned that reach far past the musical challenges they face. Some of the qualities nurtured in children exposed to piano lessons include:

Commitment. Learning to play the piano is one of the very few things a child can do that will bring an outstanding sense of accomplishment and achievement with every minute of practice. They will see and feel the results from their commitment, and realize that the more time they put into practice the more music they will be able to play. A child will come to appreciate that they are learning something which grows and develops with them, avoiding the inevitable feelings of boredom that some other past times may bring.

Self Expression. When children learn to play piano they also gain the ability to use the music as a way to express themselves and how they feel. This is important especially for children in todays society. Music has been known to have almost a therapeutic quality and can provide a child with a safe, healthy and wholesome form of self expression.

Patience. It takes time for anyone to learn to play piano, but for children this can prove to be a struggle. Children enjoy being able to play even the simplest of songs, but they will have to learn that even these songs take practice in order to be played properly. Children may also learn the importance of being patient with their instructors, the instrument itself, and the ongoing musical requests from family and relatives.

Independence. Children get older and they will realize more and more that they are individual, separate from their family. Acquiring piano playing skills sets them apart from others, giving them a more distinct identity. While in the teen years, they may not want to be different, kids will discover in high school and beyond that being unique, their own individual, is a great thing.

Accountability. One of the ways that children show responsibility is by taking care of their instrument and providing routine maintenance to ensure its long term use. Caring for a piano becomes a familiar routine for a child and they soon recognize when extra maintenance or TLC is required. This responsibility for their piano extends into other areas of their life as well. - 18762
